Arturo Fermandois (1989)

Visual artist and architect from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (2015). He has exhibited in galleries in Chile, the United States and Europe, standing out for his geometric and technological approach. Over the past few weeks, Arturo welcomed us to his workshop and we were able to talk about his research on geometry, the use of color in digital patterns and how the spectator has become a fundamental part of the evolution of his work, whose greatest references include Felipe Pantone, Jesús Rafael Soto and Carlos Cruz Díez.

Dynamic Device I It is the first work in a series that is a breaking point for Fermandois. Selected for the exhibition of the MAVI UC LarrainVial Prize 2024, this work marks a transition between his best-known two-dimensional work and a new proposal, in his words: “The presence of the person is the key that opens the work” referring to the interaction with a motion sensor, which activates it with the presence of the spectator, initiating a rotating movement of one minute that presents the spectator with an explosion of shapes and patterns that give life to the work.

Arturo's approach to art is directly related to his time in architecture, he tells us: “At first I was working on real estate projects and, bored, playing with rendering programs, I found a new model for making art.” From there, he also highlights the quality of the materials he works with, which he calls High Tech, aluminum, acrylic, stainless steel, which transport technology from architecture to art.

In his second year as a member of the Antenna community, Fermandois highlights the benefits of this space, which has allowed him to stay connected with gallery owners, curators and collectors. In addition, he has found opportunities to market his works and participate in monthly sessions with other artists, which has given him a broader view of the different rhythms of work in the art world.

Regarding Arturo's last participation in the Young Art contest at Galería ArtEspacio in October of this year, he was invited and selected to develop a new mural piece at the facilities of the Arturo López Pérez Foundation, in Providencia. This project will consist of a printed white ceramic mural, inspired by traditional Portuguese tiles, with dimensions of 2.5 x 2.5 meters.
