PAM Women's Artist Award 2020-2024

PAM Women's Artist Award 2020-2024

The PAM Women's Artist Award, organized by Fundación Antenna and Bank of America, celebrates the work of women visual artists over 60 years of age in Chile. In its five editions, this award has been able to make visible the talent of an unrecognized generation, in addition to encouraging active public participation through popular voting.

Project Stages

The PAM Women's Artist Award is developed in several strategic phases.

1. The stage of convocation includes campaigns in mass media, specialized press, social networks and collaborations with opinion leaders and influencers, in order to reach the largest number of women artists over 60 years of age throughout Chile. In the 2024 edition, we managed to reach 250,000 people at this stage and we received 330 nominations.

2. Of these 330 applications, a first filter was made by a committee of specialists. 130 artists were selected who passed to the Public Vote and the specialized jury, all through blind voting, that is, without access to the name of the artist.

3. La public voting phase activates the community, allowing direct participation through the online platform. We received 20,268 votes. The winning artist is Alejandrina Valderrama one self-taught artist from the Tarapacá region, showing that blind voting is an efficient mechanism that gives prominence to the work and not to the artist's curriculum.

4. The jury, made up of Denise Ratinoff, Representative of Christie's auction house in Chile; Ximena Rojas, visual artist and member of the board of directors of Fundación Antenna; Natalia Arcos, researcher, theorist and curator; Felipe Forteza, cultural manager, collector and representative of the Chilean Chapter of the National Museum of Women in the Arts; and Marion Díaz, representative of Bank of America, recognized the First place to Alicia Villareal, and awarded honorable mentions to Ester Chacón-Ávila and Angela Wilson.

5. The winners of the previous editions were:

  • 2023: Isabel del Rio (First place) Andrea Fischer (Public Vote), Francesca Colzani (Honorable Mention) and Ximena Izquierdo (Honorable Mention).
  • 2022: Denise Blanchard (First place) Claudia Yagnam (Public Vote), Ester Fierro (Honorable Mention) and Virginia Maluk (Honorable Mention).
  • 2021: Eugenia Vargas (First Place), Javiera Moreira (Public Vote), Rosa Velasco (Honorable Mention), Paz Lira (Honorable Mention).
  • 2020: Carmen Piemonte, Cornelia Vargas, Elsa Bolivar and Julia Toro

6. In March 2025, the 20 artists who have received the award will be part of a group exhibition at the Lo Matta Cultural Center, where you can see the crosses, dialogues and themes that this generation is going through.

Impact of the Project

Over the past five years, the PAM Women's Artist Award, in collaboration with Bank of America, has recognized 20 women artists visual, reducing the gender gap in this area. In 2024, the award received the support of Grupo Roca, which allowed it to have greater reach than in previous editions, showing how collective work and the activation of networks bring great results. We reached 47,000 web visits, consolidating the award as a vital platform for promoting women artists. Artists recognized by the award such as Cornelia Vargas have participated in the Media Arts Biennial, and others, such as Rosa Velasco and Eugenia Vargas Pereira, have achieved exhibitions in important spaces, such as the Visual Arts Museum (MAVI UC) And the National Museum of Fine Arts.

Successful Collaboration

This project stands out for its collaborative approach, bringing together media, renowned artists, and a committed community. With 330 applications and more than 20,000 votes in public participation, the award contributes to reducing the gender gap in Chilean visual arts.

Conclusion

The PAM Women's Artist Award exemplifies how alliances between companies and foundations can transform the artistic landscape, offering recognition and opportunities to a key generation of artists in Chile.
